The rate for a table at the farmers market is not yet known, nor is the date the farmers market will open. “The only thing we do know is that the farmers market will be held on Fridays,” Amanda Walker, spokesperson for the Gibsons Public Market, said Wednesday.
The temporary vendors will be in front of the market building and possibly indoors as well.
“The farmers market is separate from the public market,” Walker said. “Unfortunately, we have been so busy with the public market that the farmers market has taken a bit of a back seat. The information about the rates and the dates will be available in a few weeks.”
The farmers market will be a mixture of artisans and farmers, she said. “We’ve had a lot of interest already.”
Earlier GPM plans indicated that the farmers market would operate six days a week between late spring and fall.
At other markets, the rates for tables with produce, baked goods, and crafts are between $5 and $35 a day.
The Roberts Creek Farmers Market, which operates year round on Wednesdays from 3 to 6 p.m., charges temporary vendors $12 per day. The rate is $5 a day if the vendor commits to 30 weeks between April and October.
A 10 x 10-foot table at the Sechelt Farmers Market, which is held every Saturday from April 1 until the end of summer, costs $25 a week.
The Victoria Public Market, a year-round indoor market, charges vendors $20 per day plus tax. The population of Victoria is about 300,000.
On Granville Island in Vancouver, temporary vendors pay $35 a day for a table at the indoor market, which welcomes 1.6 million visitors a year.
