Rafael Schoelermann has a way of capturing ever-changing sea scapes in Gibsons and Egmont in an abstract and engaging way

After three successful exhibitions in Germany, photographer Rafael Schoelermann is excited his “Waterworks” series will be shown on the Sunshine Coast where his subject matter and inspiration originate.
The series of abstract photography is presented at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery from May 9 until June 2, 2019.
The opening reception is on Saturday May 11 from 2 – 4 p.m.
Schoelermann was raised in Vancouver and lives in Munich, Germany. About six years ago, he developed an interest in photography and on visits with his family on the Sunshine Coast started exploring the elements of light, wind, and clouds on the waters at Gibsons, Egmont and Horseshoe Bay.
Schoelermann comes from the artistic family of the de Grandmaisons. His grandfather Nicholas de Grandmaison was a well-known portrait painter of indigenous people in Canada and his mother Tamara de Grandmaison is a renowned portrait artist. His sisters Kecia and Simone Schoelermann are also artists.
Schoelermann studied music and became interested in non-documentary photography with an abstract nature. Experimenting with different times of day, weather conditions and light, he started to find images of a more abstract nature with the water yielding infinite variations of colours and shapes.
“I like to capture, in an abstract way, how nature ‘paints a picture’,” he says.
Depending on the type of material these photographs are reproduced on, they can appear as painted rather than a photo. Each work at this exhibitions is unique and original; there is only one copy available.
The photos are reproduced on either high quality HD High Definition Aluminum or on Hahnemuehle Fine Art Paper.
Schoelermann’ works reflect the beauty around us in a calm and engaging way.
